As The Agricultural Country,Indonesia must list agriculture sector as their primary interests. Not only The Agricultural Country,all nations in this world must have have development in this sector. Because without agriculture,a nation will import all the goods from this sector like rice , vegetables , fruits , meats and the others to supply their citizens who want to eat everyday.
For the example,Singapore. All of they needed to eat imported from the others,including Indonesia. Because they don't have the large field like Indonesia . By 710,2 km2 , Singapore can not apply agriculture systems in huge scale in their country. All their income is from taxes are quoted from the tourism sector , banking sector , public facilities even fines. By their revenues , they must import all foods for their citizens.
The situation is very different than Indonesia. Indonesia can support their needed by their own. By the large fields from Sabang to Merauke. Indonesia can supply their citizens without importing from the other nation.
If Indonesia seriously development and always researching in agriculture sector,it is not impossible Indonesia will be the bank of food in south east asia region. But very ironic,until end of 2009 , Indonesia can not accomplish their mission to self-sufficiency in meat. So Indonesia must imported from Australia to supply their need in meat.
Writer think,if Indonesia Government seriously development their agriculture sector,Indonesia don't need to imported rice from Thailand and Vietnam some previous time. Very ironic for Indonesia. If we look from our state area, Thailand or Vietnam not as wide as Indonesia but they can send their rice to their "Big Neighbor". Indonesia has experience self-sufficiency in rice but in long time ago,when the citizens not as much now.
In Indonesia , we can find the universities specifically in agricultural sector like Bogor Agricultural Institute and the others. But where is their role in the development sector in this nation? Maybe all of they research only printed in their journal. The government must see their potential , government must use them in the department of Agriculture. I think Indonesia has many experts in this sector. If we can reach self-sufficiency in raw materials,we can do the development in processing of these products. So The Agriculture sector could be one of strategic industry base in Indonesia. I sure,if all of stakeholders in this nation give their attention in this sector, I believe Indonesia will be The bank food for their own , for ASEAN region maybe Asia Pacific nations.
